50 families evacuated as gas tanker topples near Bantwal

Submitted by alvin on Tue, 2016-04-19 12:27 Mangaluru: A tanker carrying liquefied petroleum gas toppled on the Mangaluru-Bengaluru National highway at Surikumeru causing traffic chaos in the wee hours of Tuesday. As a precautionary measure, over 50 families from villages surrounding Kalladka have been evacuated.According to sources, the driver of the tanker, ferrying LPG from Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited to Bengaluru, lost control over the wheels while negotiating a curve.The impact of the accident was such that the villagers could hear the loud noise at night. They soon rushed out of their houses and found the tanker toppled. The driver and the cleaner of the tanker had fled the spot. As the gas started leaking from the tanker, panicked villagers alerted the fire brigade.Fire brigade personnel from Bantwal, Managaluru East, Mangaluru West, Belthangady and Puttur rushed to the spot and managed to plug the leakage by 8 am.Vehicles plying on the stretch were diverted. Vehicles moving towards Puttur from Mangaluru were stopped at Kalladka and diverted via Veerakmbha-Anantady-Kodaje route. Those coming from the opposite direction were stopped at Kabaka and diverted via Vittal. Vehicles coming from the direction of Uppinangady were diverted through Mani-Anantady-Veerakmbha route.Watch Video:
