Onus on women to ensure healthy diet to prevent diabetes among younger generation: Doctor

Submitted by alvin on Sat, 2016-04-09 12:23 Udupi: The number of persons with diabetes mellitus has gone up from 180 million in 1980 to 422 million in 2014, said Priyanka Mary Francis, Udupi Zilla Panchayat CEO.Addressing a gathering at World Health Day here on Thursday, Priyanka raised concern over poor lifestyle, a major factor for diabetes. She also observed that stress and changing food pattern were also the cause. Lauding the efforts of Manipal College of Nursing for organising awareness programme, Priyanka felt that more such awareness campaigns would help in educating the public about the disease.Dr Anice George Dean, Manipal College of Nursing Manipal laid emphasis on women’s role in ensuring a healthy and nutritious diet in their family to prevent diabetes among younger generation.During the seminar, Dr M Mukhyaprana Prabhu, Professor and Unit Head, Department of General Medicine KMC Manipal spoke on “Clinical management of patients with diabetes”. He highlighted the severity of diabetes in India, risk factors, new and effective diagnostic methods and treatments and prevention of complication and diabetes mellitus. He said that health education played an important role in beating diabetes.On Wednesday, a poster competition was organised for the faculty and students of Manipal University on the World Health Day theme.
