RTI activist hacked to death in Mangaluru

Submitted by alvin on Mon, 2016-03-21 19:21 Mangaluru: An RTI activist also an electrical contractor was brutually hacked to death by unidentified youth, in the early hours of Monday in Mangaluru. The deceased is identified as Vinayak Panduranga Baliga alias Vidyuth Baliga, a resident of Kodialguttu.According to sources, the incident took place when the victim was heading towards a temple in his scooter around 5.30 am. Two motorcycle-borne youth attcked Baliga with lethal weapons from behind. The miscreants fled from the scene leaving Baliga in the pool of blood. Passerby rushed Bailga to the hospital, but doctors declared he was brought dead. Barke police rushed to the spot and conducted primary investigation. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Sanjiv Patil, City Crime Branch (CCB) police inspector Valentine D'Souza and Mangaluru East police inspector Maruti visited the spot. Dog squad has also been pressed to service. Though police verified the footage of two CCTV cameras, installed near PVS building, it did not yield positive result, police sources said. Although Baliga was an electrical contractor, he was known for his crusade against illegal buildings mushrooming in the region through his RTI work. He lived alone. According to sources, he had received threat calls from the builders. However, police did not confirm it as no complaint was registered in this regard. It is said that, Baliga was planning to expose misappropriation of funds in a temple located in the heart of the city and he was gathering information.Police are investigating the case.
