They seem to be the perfect concealers to sneak away the yellow metal. For, customs officials at the Mangalore International Airport seized these items and recovered 5.5 kg gold valued over Rs 1.57 crore from them. Last month, the sleuths found that solar power invertors, power banks and mobile phone cases were used to conceal the gold, which – according to the officials – was quite different from the usual mode of concealment. Usually, mixer, speaker or an oven are used to conceal gold. In a press release, Dr M Subramanyam, Commissioner of Customs said that frequent detections by the officials have forced the smugglers to invent new ways to sneak gold. In addition to the yellow metal, the officials have also seized 232 cartons of foreign-made cigarettes valued over Rs 4 lakh last month. Last year a total of 46.72 Kgs of gold (worth Rs 14.25 crore) was seized which was later auctioned through banks and credited to the government exchequer.
