During the monthly SC/ST grievances meeting held at SP office on Tuesday, Dalit leader Rajaram Beltangady said initially the Uppinangady police refused to treat it as a serious case, saying that the accused was a mentally challenged person, but when Dalit leaders refused to buy the police's argument and raised a hue and cry, Uppinangady police filed a case under Prevention Of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Another Dalit leader Shekhar Beltangady sought action against the sub-inspector of Uppinangady police station claiming that his negligent attitude had violated the rights of the girl. The leaders demanded the setting up of a separate committee headed by an Additional SP to probe the case. Shekhar also referred to the recent attack on a journalist during the meeting and demanded the arrest of culprits. ASP Vincent Shanta Kumar assured the leaders of a honest probe into the case and stringent punishment to the accused. On the issue of alleged illegal activities at PG centres, the ASP assured of conducting a separate meeting on the matter.
