Later, the merchant reportedly had a heated exchange with an engineer from Mangalore Electric Supply Company (MESCOM) over the power situation. The twin misadventures landed the merchant behind bars, as the Sullia police, based on a complaint by the MESCOM engineer, arrested the merchant. SD Sharanappa, Superintendent of Police, Dakshina Kannada district, said the accused had been identified as Sai Giridhar Rai of Bellare. “Giridhar had called up energy minister over the phone and misbehaved with him. He also rushed to the MESCOM office in Sullia and had a fight with an Executive Engineer. We have taken up a case against him based on the complaint lodged by a MESCOM engineer and arrested him,” Sharanappa said. The police said that the accused had been produced before a local court and remanded in judicial custody. Sai Giridhar was a former president of Bellare Merchant's Association in the region. The Sullia police said that Sai Giridhar had called up energy minister DK Shivakumar over the power situation but the minister did not respond well to his complaint. Sai Giridhar alleged that he was abused by the minister, forcing him to return the favour, said the police. “We have registered a case under section 353 (Criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 506 (criminal intimidation) and other sections of IPC against him,” Sullia police said. Rai was released on bail on Monday evening, sources added.
