The nun, admitted to Wenlock hospital for treatment of injuries, told Bfirst.in that the police officer, Sub-Inspector Sandesh P G of Belthangady Police Station, called her a ‘prostitute,’ tore her clothes and misbehaved with her. The police officer also tore the clothes a woman named Jennifer Saldanha, hugged her repeatedly and threatened that he would rape her. When a few women tried to record the attack on their mobile phones, the officer slapped them, snatched their mobiles and allegedly damaged them. The provocation for the attack seems to a complaint Jennifer Saldanha had lodged against the Sub-Inspector with the Assistant Superintendent of Police, for failure to take action against a certain Anil Furtado, also a resident of Belthangady, who was harassing Jennifer and her family over an alleged false case. In fact, all the women, met the Superintendent of Police at his office, wearing the clothes torn by PSI Sandesh, narrated their plight to the SP and submitted a complaint against the PSI According to the complaint filed by Jennifer Saldanha, Police Sub Inspector Sandesh P G along with two other policemen arrived at the residence of Walter Saldanha, allegedly in an inebriated state, around 8.30 pm on Monday, while the family was celebrating the wedding of Walter’s younger brother Alwyn. As soon as the trio of policemen arrived at the Saldanha residence, one of them locked the back door from outside. They then assaulted Walter. When Alwyn and wife Walter’s wife Jennifer and the nun, a cousin, questioned the police officer, he allegedly beat them up too and manhandled Jennifer.
