But the election of Sultana Nazir was not without drama. As the seat was reserved for an OBC woman, it was clear that the candidate would be from the JD(S) since the BJP had no OBC candidate. The JD(S) had two candidates - Nayeema Sulthana Nazir Ahmed and Parimala Shyam. Both filed nomination papers for the president post in the morning which triggered rivalry within the party. Later, in order to secure Muslim votes and under the instructions of JD(S) leader former Prime Minister H D Devegowda, party leaders, MLA SR Mahesh and MLA GT Devegowda, set aside differences and decided to back Sulthana Nazir. Sulthana Nazir, who represents JD(S) from Annur constituency in H D Kote, was finally elected as president of Mysuru Zilla Panchayath after she garnered 27 votes out of 49 members ZP house, while Kayyamballi Nataraj of the BJP representing Muguru Constituency was elected as the vice-president. The Congress, which became largest party in Zilla Panchayath election by winning 22 seats, remained in the opposition. A BJP-JD(S) coalition was sworn in to power in ZP Mysuru with 27 votes out of total 49 seats, sidelining the Congress which emerged as single major party with 22 seats in the 49-member panchayath.
