Submitted by Kumuda on Thu, 2016-05-05 15:36 Bengaluru: An 18-year-old girl in Ballari set herself ablaze after a man in whose house she was employed, forced her to strip to undergo a body search after some gold rings went missing from his house. Having suffered With 50 per cent burn injuries, Anjali is now battling for her life at VIMS hospital, Ballari. The incident occurred on April 15, but has just come to light. Mehul Kantilal alias Chintu asked Anjali, who worked at his house, about gold rings missing from his home. When Anjali told him that she was innocent, Chintu abused her, even making comments her caste. Anjali belongs to the Valmiki caste. Despite Anjali pleading her innocence, Chintu accused her of stealing jewellery and asked her to strip to prove her innocence. He even threatened her that he would use his influence to get her jailed. Returning home, Anjali told her mother about the humiliation she underwent. Deeply anguished, Anjali attempted suicide by setting herself ablaze. “We immediately rushed her to the hospital. She has suffered 50 per cent of burns,” said Yaramma. Yaramma has filed a complaint against Chintu, but he hs managed to get bail. "The girl was tortured a lot and now she is lying in the hospital bed. Yet, the police have granted bail to the accused. We want justice", said a relative of Anjali. Narayan, president of Valmiki Sene, Ballari district – along with other organisations – met Chetan, Ballari SP on Thursday and demanded that Chintu be arrested immediately.​
