The electricity and water tariffs will be doubled exclusively for expats here with effect from March 2016. The hike would be in force upto 2019, till the actual production cost of these two vital services are met. This was officially disclosed on Tuesday by Energy Minister Dr Abdulhussain Mirza media meet that followed the weekly Cabinet meeting in Gudaibiya Palace. The minister announced that the increase follows the decision of the Cabinet to approve the recommendation of the Financial Affairs and Expenditures Rationalising Ministerial Committee to amend the existing tariffs, adding that the cost of electricity and water sector in the fiscal years of 2013-2014 was BD 350 million. According to the ministry’s statistics, the amendment would save the Government BD 435.4 million in the next four years. The minister also explained that Bahrainis with single accounts with the Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) would not be affected by the new amendment. However, he explained that the increase would also include Bahrainis with multiple accounts with the EWA and non-domestic users (industrial and commercial).
