Dr HG Shekarapp, Registrar (Evaluation), Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum, has been asked to carry on as the V-C under Section 13 (7) of the VTU act, 1994 with immediate effect, until further orders, said the release. Dr H Maheshappa had assumed as the VC of the VTU on July 1, 2010, and his term was extended by another three years under mysterious circumstances in 2014. The corruption saga Governor Vajubhai Vala had appointed a one-man commission of enquiry headed by retired judge of state high court Justice Ajith Gunjal in December 2014 to look into allegations of corruption in the VTU. In May, 2015, Justice Gunjal opted out of the committee and replaced by former high court judge KN Keshavanarayana as the head of the commission. Commission had submitted its report in the first week of February 2016. The suspension order came after both VTU and the V-C failed to file their replies on the findings of the commission. The commission had probed allegations of corruption in appointments, regularisation of services, allegation of corruption in the building contracts. Maheshappa had courted controversies from day one during his time as V-C, with the widely-publicised infamous fake CV case earning him much notoriety.
