55-yr-old pourakarmika run over by speeding bus

Submitted by Editor on Mon, 2016-03-14 18:50 Bengaluru: A 55-year-old woman, working as a pourakarmika with the BMTC, was killed after she was hit by a speeding bus at the Shivajinagar bus stand on Monday morning.The deceased woman Sarojamma, wife of Penchalaiah, was a resident of MRS Palya near Jayamahal and had been working as a pourakarmika with BMTC for the last 15 years.The police said the incident occurred early Monday morning when Sarojamma was sweeping the premises of Shivajinagar bus terminus. A speeding bus knocked her down, with the front wheel running over the head of Sarojamma. Onlookers rushed a bleeding Sarojamma to Bowring Hospital where she was declared brought dead.Bus driver Hanumanthegowda later surrendered at the Shivajinagar police station. Sarojamma was employed by Panorama, a contractor, and was being paid Rs4,000 as salary. She was provided with no other benefits. Sarojamma along with five others wored in the morning shift while four others came in the evening shift.There were tense scenes at Bowring Hospital mortuary after labours union members and family of Sarojamma demanded better compensation. Shivajinagar police, who arrived at the scene, convinced the family they would help them in getting better compensation from the BMTC
