The environment-friendly project, which is 60 percent complete, aims to connect stormwater with lakes via separate pipelines in order to prevent mixing of sewage with storm water, said the BBMP. The project being taken up at an estimated cost of Rs56 crore is expected to finish work within five months. The lakes situated in Bommanahalli, Hulimavu, Basavanapura, Akshayanagara and Srinivasapura will come under the project. Speaking about the sewage and stormwater drain project HC Ananthaswamy, Chief Executive Engineer, BBMP, said the project aimed to “transport stormwater to lakes”. Ananthaswamy said earlier stormwater was contaminated with sewage water and flowed into the lakes in Bengaluru. “But now separate pipelines will be laid for transporting sewage and rainwater, so that rainwater can flow directly into the lakes and sewage water is kept separate,” he added.
