`Champion` Windies seal World T20 title after Brathwaite sinks England

Submitted by alvin on Mon, 2016-04-04 09:13 Kolkata: West Indies pulled off a sensational run-chase as they thumped England by four wickets in front of an electric crowd here at the Eden Gardens to become the first team to lift the World Twenty20 title twice. Chasing a challenging target of 156, West Indies crossed the finishing line with two balls remaining, thanks to Marlon Samuels (85 not out) and a late flourish from Carlos Brathwaite, who smacked 34 off mere 10 balls, including four consecutive sixes in the last over off Ben Stokes. West Indies were reeling at 11 for three before Samuels and Dwayne Bravo (25) steadied the ship by stitching a 75-run partnership for the fourth wicket. However, the dismissal of Bravo triggered another mid-innings collapse as Andre Russell (1) and captain Darren Sammy (2) followed the suit. England looked set for lifting another title before Samuels and Brathwaite steered West Indies towards sensational victory by displayed their batting prowess as they accumulated 54 runs in the last four overs. Earlier, the Eoin Morgan-led side recovered from a shaky start to make 155 for nine after they were asked to bat first. Joe Root was the top scorer for their side with 54. For West Indies, Bravo and Brathwaite claimed three wickets apiece, while spinner Samuel Badree bagged two wickets. Samuels was adjudged as the Player of the Match, while India's star batsman Virat Kohli was awarded the Player of the Series for scoring a staggering 273 runs in his five games.(ANI)
