Submitted by Newseditor on Fri, 2015-11-20 16:03 Manipal: The Department of OBG Nursing and Child Health Nursing chalked out elaborate plans for the newborn week which had the theme, “Indian Neonatal Action Plan”. The programme started with poem writing competition, talks on mothers caring for the newborn, radio telecast on newborn care, awareness programme on care of mother and child and a workshop on humanised neonatal care. The poem competition was in English, Hindi, Kannada and Malayalam and there were 48 participants in all. Topic was, “Newborn”. The Best poems from Christeena John (Ist BSc N, MCON Manipal) in English, Priya (Intern MSON) in Kannada, Shreya Singh (Student MCODS) in Hindi and Evlin Roy (student Dept of Clinical Psychology) in Malayalam. Winners among the faculty were: Piya Paul Mudgal (Asst Prof, dept of Viral Research) in English and Rajesh Bhat (Dept of Finance, MU) in Kannada. In the observation of mothers caring for the newborn, mothers were observed and evaluated for the care provided to their neonates for a week from November 9, 2015. Observation was done in postnatal wards of Kasturba Hospital, Manipal. Sreelatha admitted in postnatal ward, mother of a baby girl residing at Kundapura was selected as Best Mother based on the assessment. A Role play on “Newborn Care”by Postgraduates students of MCON was broadcast by FM on November 14, 2015 at 5:30 pm in 90.4FM and it was broadcast again on November 18, 2015 and will be repeated once again on November 21, 2015 at 6pm on 90.4FM. The awareness programme on care of mother and child was held in collaboration with Rotary Club, Shankarpura. Sixty mothers of under five children and Anganwadi and play school teachers took part in the sessions on Essential Newborn Care, Prevention of Communicable Diseases in children and Care of Child during Illness, Importance of Balanced Diet for Women and Children, Dos and Don’ts regarding Care of Children. Yashoda Sathish, Assistant Professor, Department of Child Health Nursing and Maria Pais, Assistant Professor, Department of OBG Nursing led the sessions. President and members of Rotary club, Shankarpura supported the programme. The workshop on humanized neonatal care was held on November 17, 2015. Thirty nine participants from different institutions were present. Sessions on Neuro motor assessment and management were taken by Dr. Bhamini K Rao, Professor and HOD, Department of Physiotherapy, SOAHS, Manipal. Family Centred Care was addressed by Dr Baby S Nayak, Professor, Department of Child Health Nursing MCON, Manipal. Dr Jayashree Purkaystha Associate Professor, Department of Paediatrics, KH Manipal, spoke on healing environment. Yashoda Satish Assistant Professor, Department of Child Health Nursing MCON, Manipal took the session on comprehensive high risk care of newborn. Dr. Anice George, Dean MCON Manipal was the chief guest for Valedictory session. All programmes were coordinated by Sweety Fernandes, Sushmitha Karkada, Yashoda Sathish, Assistant Professors, MCON Manipal and Dr. Baby S Nayak, Professor, Manipal College of Nursing.
