He was addressing the T-Shirt distribution programme as part of the “Car-Free day”, an initiative by Mangalore Bicycle Club to introduce use of bicycles in city for making it pollution free and encourage use of public transportation system. Murugan pointed out that he will convene a meeting with his department staff to not use four-wheeler on second Saturday of every month. The T-shirts launched by the Commissioner of Police had the message ``Car-Free day, Turn off Your Engines''. He said that apart from the pollution the accident cases were also increasing every day in city. So there is need of promoting the use of public transport system as well as bicycles atleast one day in a month or week. The car or other four-wheel vehicle owners should support the cause, he stressed. He said that Mangaluru city needs more traffic signal points and parking lots. Availability of less parking place creates traffic block on narrow roads. There is a need for 10 signal points in city. The Mangaluru City Corporation and the Mangaluru Urban Development Authority should help in the installation of signals, the commissioner added. MBC Founder Ganesh Nayak informed that “Car-free Day” was organised to create awareness among the public on environmental pollution. The programme was launched on October 10 and it will be observed on November 14.
