Submitted by Newseditor on Wed, 2015-11-11 18:03 Mangaluru: The Mangalore International Airport customs officials seized about 0.93 kgs of gold in the form of 1 cylindrical rod shaped object valued at Rs 24.25 lakh from a passenger who attempted to smuggle the contraband into the country. One premium brand speaker/woofer which was brought by a passenger, who arrived by Air India Express flight number IX384 from Dubai on November 3 was recovered by the customs officials for further examination. The speaker was then subjected to a detailed open examination on November 7 and gold in the form of small cylindrical rod which was ingeniously concealed in the inner core portion of the said speaker, was retrieved with the help of technically qualified persons. On interrogation, the passenger has deposed that he intentionally concealed the gold to avoid detection by customs and to evade payment of appropriate duties of customs. Since the gold was attempted to be smuggled into India in contravention of the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962, read with the Baggage Rules, 1998, the gold valued at Rs 24.25 lakh was seized. The passenger was arrested on November 7 and produced before Sunil Kumar Singh, Principal Civil Judge (senior division) and Chief Judicial Magistrate, here who remanded him to judicial custody for 14 days. Further investigation is under progress.
