Quadruple amputee Shalini to run in 10K marathon

Submitted by alvin on Fri, 2016-05-13 19:59 New Delhi: Shalini Saraswathi, who had her limbs amputated while battling a rare bacterial infection, has shown her indomitable fighting spirit with her resolve to participate in the prestigious Tata Consultancy Services World 10K Marathon to be held inBangalore on Sunday.The quadruple amputee suffered a mild fever four year ago and was later diagnosed with Rickettsial with morts, a rare bacterial infection, which had turned her life upside down.After battling with physical and emotional trauma, Shalini had no other option before her but to go for amputation after falling prey to gangrene.37-year-old Shalini also suffered from multiple organ failure, including a miscarriage, while battling with the disease.Currently being trained under former athlete and coach B. P. Aiyappa, Shalini is hoping to complete the race in 90 minutes.Reflecting on the challenges he faced while training Shalini, Aiyappa said he never treated her like a special case and insisted that he was as strict with her as he used to be with the other students.Meanwhile, Shalini credited her family and coach for this achievement and also thanked them for their constant support and motivation.Shalini is currently working as a deputy general manager with a Mumbai-based BPO.
