'Want everyone's blessings to perform well at Rio', says Dipa Karmakar

Submitted by alvin on Thu, 2016-04-21 18:24 New Delhi: Dipa Karmakar, who scripted history by becoming the first Indian woman gymnast to qualify for the Olympics, on Thursday sought blessings from her countrymen to perform well at the Rio Games in August."I want everyone's blessings to perform well at Rio Olympics. My main target will be to give my best. I am not feeling any pressure going into the Olympics as my coach is with me, who don't allow me to take any pressure," said an elated Karmakar in an exclusive interview to ANI.Jubilant with her recent success, the 22-year-old said that she hopes to see gymnastics achieve new heights in the coming future."Olympics is the biggest podium for any sportsperson and I am very happy to become the first Indian woman to qualify for it. I want to congratulate all the gymnasts for the recent success and I wish to see the sports achieve new heights," she said."I want to thank Sports Authority of India and Gymnastics Federation of India as I couldn't have been here without their support," Karmakar added.Meanwhile, Karmakar's coach Bishwashwar Nandi admitted that he was feeling quite nervous at the moment, but added that he would not let this pressure have any influence on his gymnast."A gymnast can turn into a good one, if he or she follows his coach's guidance properly because it is a really complicated game. It is entirely different from other sports. We will put our best foot forward for Olympics," Nandi affirmed.Dipa, who hails from Tripura, secured an Olympic Games berth in artistic gymnastics at a qualifying event in Rio de Janeiro by posting a total score of 52.698 points on Sunday.A day after sealing Rio berth, Karmakar created another history by becoming the first Indian woman to clinch gold in a global gymnastics event.She had also claimed a bronze medal in the women's vault final of the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, making her the first Indian woman to win in a Commonwealth Gamesgymnastic event.
